ABOUT THE ARTIST
June L. Maxwell received her formal training at the Moore College of Art in Philadelphia, studying under Paulette van Roekens and Arthur Meltzer and in later years, lessons from Richard Pionk and workshops with Daniel Greene. Having won numerous awards, both locally and in New York, she was invited to lecture and demonstrate at the Salmagundi Club and the Pastel Society of America. She was also an instructor for the P.S.A. National Arts School. In 1997, she was designated a Master Pastelist by the Pastel Society of America. Her paintings are represented in collections throughout the country.
June likes simple uncluttered designs, often selecting a single vase that becomes powerful in its simplicity, but texture and light are at the heart of most of her paintings. They have been described as luminous, with the use of reflected light a recurring theme in her strong still life compositions. She loves to depict objects that show a strong contrast in textural quality, incorporating them along with her signature fruit into her paintings. When asked as to when she knows a painting is finished, she would reply "when I can feel the texture with my eyes!"
